Rocky Mountain & Dos Rios Elementary Schools

Grand Junction, Colorado

These two prototypical elementary schools were designed to meet the needs of a growing student population and replace outdated facilities. The schools feature a brick exterior, tile corridors, and expansive exterior doors and windows to allow natural light into the spaces. Each school, at 49,380 sf, also has a full prep kitchen, direct digitally controlled variable air volume HVAC systems, and category 5 cabling. Every classroom has its own exterior door. There are specialized rooms for music, physical education, a library, computers, assembly, resources, and support functions.

Each dining hall seats approximately 200. With an adjacent storage room, refreshment nook, and cabinetry to store craft supplies, the room can serve multiple functions over the course of the day. Sites were made pedestrian-friendly by separating the bus/service drives from the parking and drop-off lanes, and separating playground areas from vehicular areas.
