This project provided new visitor facilities at a primary trailhead within the Park, including a comfort station, a ranger contact office, and an interpretive shelter.

The buildings are arranged around an entrance plaza that draws visitors through the open-air interpretive shelter to an historic cut in the natural grade, leading to a section of the rehabilitated Wilderness Road.

The courtyard paving is engraved with text about the people who passed through the Cumberland Gap, local geography and history. The buildings’ style is derived from the vernacular tobacco sheds of the region, using local eastern white oak and stone.
