A Seven-Year Journey - the GJ Regional Center Homes

Yolanda Webb, the Director of the Office of Adult, Aging, and Disability Services for the State of Colorado, celebrates the grand opening of the GJ Regional Center Homes.

Chamberlin Architects is thrilled to announce the successful completion of our latest project in Grand Junction – The GJ Regional Center Homes. This significant undertaking, spanning seven years, stands as a testament to our unwavering dedication to the community and our commitment to serving the underserved. In 2016, the State Legislature passed a bill to close the existing facility and transition the remaining residents into a residential setting, making this project all the more important.

On July 22nd, 2022, we celebrated the groundbreaking for the Regional Center Homes. Middle back is Daniel Gartner, Vice-President of Chamberlin Architects.

In 2018, the Colorado Dept of Human Services (DHS) Office of Community Access and Independence entrusted our firm with the responsibility of designing two homes for residents with intellectual developmental disabilities who require intermediate care. These homes were to be placed within an existing neighborhood, each approximately 4,000SF in size, featuring six bedrooms, and answering the DHS's challenge of creating homes that would be inviting to anyone. It was essential to consider the unique behavioral needs and potential dual diagnoses with medical requirements of the residents.

As such, the homes differ slightly from the average household. We thoughtfully integrated measures that accommodate these evolving behaviors while ensuring a safe environment for both residents and staff. Leveraging our experience from behavioral health, medical, and senior housing projects, Chamberlin led the design team to create homes that foster resident engagement. The design enables residents to participate in day-to-day activities to the best of their abilities, such as meal preparation and personal laundry, while also offering multiple options for personal space when needed.

Eric Tscherter, President of Chamberlin Architects said, "We, at Chamberlin Architects, are proud to have been a part of this transformative project that significantly impacts the GJ Regional Center community."

Today, on July 20, 2023, we celebrate the Welcome Home event with all those whose efforts laid the foundation for this remarkable project. Their dedication and unwavering commitment provided Chamberlin Architects with the opportunity to bring our expertise to this endeavor, further demonstrating our mission to make a positive difference in the communities we serve. We are humbled by the opportunity to create spaces that promote inclusivity, dignity, and a sense of belonging for the residents of these new homes.
