The Moab Information Center offers “one-stop shopping” to those visiting south­eastern Utah’s many parks and public lands. It was a cooperative venture among five federal and local agencies.

Chamberlin Architects facilitated planning discus­sions among these different groups - the National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, U.S.D.A. Forest Service, Canyonlands Natural History Association, Grand County Travel Council, Grand County, and the City of Moab - to determine the program, operations, design, and costs for the building.

Located on 1.2 acres on a prime corner in downtown Moab, the site includes RV parking and a public plaza.

The 3,000 sf Center’s architecture is purposely understated to provide a respite from the disparate buildings in town, as well as to create an architectural form that relates to the colors, shapes, and textures of the surrounding sandstone cliffs. The design offsets the cantilevered, triangular roof form with the irregular stone and stucco masses of the base structure. This roof provides shading over public benches. The curvilinear plaza utilizes xeri­c landscaping with native plants and boulders to provide informal and inviting public space in a densely commercial zone.
