This comprehensive remodel of a 1950s classroom building rectified issues with noise, glare, room proportions, outdated finishes, thermal envelope, accessibility, and failing mechanical and electrical systems. Offices were grouped together and lounges and display areas were added to create a better sense of community.
The Kelley Hall renovation took an older, unappreciated building and gave it new life. The initial intention was to make the 25,000 sf building more energy efficient, but interviews with building users identified barriers to effective building use. The final design unified what was a physically separated faculty into an office suite, made classrooms more attractive and useable, and created a home for the Environmental Studies department.
Some of the features added to achieve LEED Gold (Existing Building) include: additional wall and ceiling insulation; new efficient lighting; daylight harvesting technology (sensors, adjustable lighting); advanced building controls to provide better building management of energy use; a new energy-efficient transformer; new boilers; and an upgraded HVAC system that utilizes energy-efficient pumps and advanced filters for better air quality.
