The original goal for this Waldorf-inspired school was to create an organic, loose community in harmony with the natural world.
The 2016 master plan called for separate pavilions connected by boardwalks interwoven through the wooded site. When the funding source shifted to bonds guaranteed by School District 51, the design changed to a unitary building having a single point of entry to meet District safety standards. The completed Phase 1 includes a residential-feeling wood framed building with kindergarten and common spaces. It is built to surround and conceal a new pre-engineered metal building that serves as the community hall. The seven modulars, which house the upper grades, were relocated until future phases can be built.
The kindergartens have curvilinear ceilings, large windows, and access to a wide outdoor covered porch. They successfully reflect the values and spiritual feeling of the school. Natural accents are used where durability concerns allowed.
